Drugstore Hair Products VS. Professional Hair Products....
and what the real difference is!

VS.

I know, I know, every hair dresser tells you that you have to have a professional brand of hair products. But what is the truth?

What I am about to say, myself being a hair dresser aside, is based on the truth of the products and based on personal experience on myself as well as my clients, not based on commercials or ads trying to sell a particular product.

Basically it comes down to this. You are paying for the quality of that product. Yes, all hair products have similar ingredients. Some ingredients better than others.

Take shampoo for an example. All shampoos have one basic ingredient known as surfactants. Surfactants are the cleaning agents in shampoos that create the shampoo to lather. If most every shampoo has this then why buy a professional brand when you can spend less on a non-professional brand? Out of the three kinds of surfactants (ammonium laurel sulfate, sodium laurel sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate) sodium laureth sulfate being the most expensive out of the three, but it the most gentle on the hair. This ingredient is found in the professional brands. This is just one example out of many to point out.

Drugstore brand products are less concentrated, meaning you actually have to use more of that product at any given time for the product to actually do what it says. A professional brand is very concentrated, meaning you only use a quarter size at the most (even on longer hair) using way less of that product each time. I use a 10oz bottle of shampoo and it lasts me average of 3 1/2 months and I have thick hair all the way down my back! to When you really look at the difference at what you are getting it its not a hard decision.

One of my questions from the begining even before I started doing hair has always been this: If you are going to spend the money to have a professional cut, color, and/or style your hair, spending a sizable amount of money on your hair to get a color that will last, and keep your hair looking and feeling healthy and shiny, then why would you buy a product for $4 or $5 dollars and do the exact opposite as what we are trying to do? Just think about it.

Same goes for getting professional color. I have clients all the time asking me why they should have a professional color their hair vs them going to the drugstore to buy their own hair color and coloring it themselves. But that is a whole different post for another day. :)

Again, this is not coming from a class I took while in cosmetology school or based on what everyone is telling me. This is something that I have played around with and know from personal experience.

I will leave you with this......

With everything else aside what everyone really wants it to have healthy and beautiful hair! So I will let you decide what will give you the hair that you really want and that you are after. But, most importantly what will work best for you.
